Boba tea anyone? Taiwan’s most popular drink has taken the US (and probably the world) by storm in recent years, including a shop specifically for this drink in my small hometown in Pennsylvania. If you are not familiar, boba tea is a cold, frothy, creamy drink made by blending a tea base with milk, fruit, fruit juice or other sweeteners and then adding a magic ingredient…pearls. Not real pearls, but a “pearl” made out of tapioca – a starch extracted from the roots of cassava plants. Interesting beverage, isn’t it?
As I am celebrating 23 years in the market research industry next month, you may think this is going to launch into a dissertation on boba tea! After all, I’m sure you are curious about year over year sales, new flavor possibilities, new packaging ideas, and new marketing campaigns to help launch this delicious treat into your hometown as well. Actually, sorry to disappoint, but that is not it at all. The reason I mention this is because my daughter asked me to go check out our local boba tea shop this afternoon.
As both of my girls head back to school in just a couple of weeks, it is important to savor every moment that is left of summer vacation – which includes taking some time this afternoon to go for tea. Yes, as a busy project director I have lots going on, but it is too easy to forget about a work life balance which is critical, especially as a father with children in the household. Here at Echo, we are very untraditional when it comes to our workday. There is no expectation that you are sitting at your desk from 9am to 5pm. Maybe you work better early in the morning or late at night, maybe you need to run to a personal appointment or hit the gym in the afternoon, or maybe you simply want to take your daughter for some boba tea! Having a flexible work schedule is just a small part of the Echo company culture that has allowed us to grow globally like nothing I have seen before. You may be thinking, “why is that”'?
For me personally, it is simple… I am more productive working when I want to work. I am not as distracted since I plan my time and I am not missing important life events such as my kids' basketball games which makes for a better quality of life. How do our clients feel about this? Ask any one of them, our communication is on point all of the time! We set clear communication expectations from the start and can easily deliver urgent updates “on the go”!
So, as we as an industry head into our “busy season” and our kids head back to school, consider breaking free from the desk! Get the work done, but live your life! Your kids will thank you; your co-workers will thank you, and your clients will thank you!
Looking for an untraditional company to bring your research project to life? Give us a shout! We love providing new solutions to your research needs!
